Dr. Yewande Omikunle, founder of African Skilled Youth Advocacy for Sustainable Development (ASYASD) and Director of Public Affairs for the Satah Ayoka Oduwaiye Foundation, has called for urgent health policy reform in Nigeria to improve breast cancer awareness, with a special focus on rural communities.

Breast cancer remains a significant health challenge, particularly in rural areas where awareness, early detection, and access to healthcare services are severely limited. Dr. Omikunle emphasises that current health policies must be reformed to prioritise education, screening, and support programs that effectively reach underserved populations.

“Effective health policy reform is critical to bridge the awareness gap and save lives,” Dr. Omikunle stated. “By targeting rural communities, we have the power to ensure early diagnosis and better treatment outcomes, reducing breast cancer mortality rates in Nigeria.”

Her advocacy calls for collaborative efforts between government agencies, healthcare providers, NGOs, and community leaders to develop sustainable breast cancer awareness programs. The goal is to empower women with the knowledge and resources they need to take proactive steps toward their health.

Dr. Omikunle’s leadership through ASYASD and the Sarah Ayoka Oduwaiye Foundation continues to inspire action and bring hope to thousands, making breast cancer awareness an achievable priority in Nigeria’s health agenda.
